Unrelated photos of a woman, a woman's corpse, and a wedding card are being circulated on social media with false communal claims.
A picture of the logo of Madras high court is going viral on social media with the claim that its motto has been changed from "Vaimaiye Vellum" (Truth alone triumphs) to "Satyameva Jayate".
A Facebook user Stop Hindi Imposition posted an image using the caption "The Tamil logo in the judiciary has been replaced by Sanskrit/Hindi. Is Tamil too low for the judiciary? The nerve to put Sanskrit when the whole world knows that Tamil is independent of Sanskrit. Trying to establish Sanskrit and Hindi servitude/ tarnish the credibility of Tamil's independence and make it look as if it is an offshoot of Sanskrit. This is symbolic hegemony of Sanskrit/ Hindi,"
In our investigation, we found that the viral claim is false. The Tamil Nadu government has not changed its motto from Tamil to Hindi and the Madras high court motto has always been in Hindi.
We checked the official website of the Madras high court and found that its emblem always had the motto "Satyamev Jayate" which is a Sanskrit word .
We found saved versions of the current URL of Madras HC from May 2, 2006, December 31, 2019, and June 29, 2020, which proves that the motto has always been in Sanksrit.
We also checked the official website of the Tamil Nadu government and found that it also maintains its motto in Tamil (Vaimaiye Vellum) and English (Truth Alone Triumphs).
According to a report of The Hindu which was published on February 3, 2018, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly passed a resolution urging to the Centre to make Tamil the official language of Madras HC in 2006 but this was rejected by the Supreme Court. Similar resolutions from the Tamil Nadu government were also rejected in 1997 and 1999.
As per Article 348 (1) of the Constitution of India, English is the official language for all the high courts. However, as per Clause (2) of Article 348, the Governor of a state, with the previous consent of the President of India, can authorize the use of the official language of the state in proceedings before its high court. The State government has been taking steps to urge the Centre to make Tamil the official language in Madras High Court, even though the plea was rejected twice by the full bench of the supreme court.
In Conclusion, the viral claim that The Tamil Nadu government and Madras high court have changed their motto from Tamil to Hindi is false. We found that the Madras High Court motto has always been in Sanskrit. Also, the Tamil Nadu government has not changed its motto from Tamil to Hindi.
